Officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call at the home in the 9200 block of Raintree Lane around 4:18 a.m.

Officers said when they arrived they found William Hale, 56, suffering from a gunshot wound. Paramedics rushed him to Carolinas Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Hale's son, 23-year-old Charles Hale, told Channel 9 the shooting was in self-defense. He said his father wasn't well and was on medication when he threatened to burn down the family's home early Saturday morning.

Hale's son said during the confrontation his father grabbed for his gun and it went off. Police confirmed the bullet fatally struck Hale in his leg.

Investigators interviewed Charles Hale at police headquarters and had yet to file any charges.

The investigation is ongoing.
