CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The hearing scheduled for a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer charged with hitting and killing a pedestrian was continued Wednesday.

Officer Phillip Barker is accused of colliding with James Michael Short on Morehead Street on July 8 while responding to another crash.
Investigators said Barker was going 100 mph in a 35 mph zone when he hit Short.
CMPD has strict guidelines for emergency responses and said speed must always be reasonable and prudent. Those guidelines also say officers must reduce speed at intersections and consider the seriousness of the call when responding.
Because Barker is a first-time offender, if he's convicted he could be sentenced to 60 days in jail, though he could also receive probation and a suspended sentence.
