CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A residential development that recently broke ground in University City looks a lot like student housing. But while it will cater to UNC Charlotte students as an off-campus residential option, it’s not strictly reserved for them.
The development model, frequently referred to as co-living, isn’t new. But it’s not as common in Charlotte as it is in other places and, perhaps, presents another housing alternative in a city continuing to grapple with an affordability crisis.
Aspen Heights, a developer out of Austin, Texas, that specializes in student housing, has begun construction on the 188-unit development, at 300 Heritage Lake Drive, behind Cortland University North. The $60 million project, Aspen Heights University City, will be leasable to students and nonstudents alike.
