Communities across SC mark National Night Out

ROCK HILL, S.C. — (AP) Hundreds of people in communities across South Carolina are observing National Night Out with a variety of events.

What began in 1984 as people leaving their porch lights on as way to join together to stand against crime has now evolved into events ranging from rallies and neighborhood cookouts to youth events and law enforcement demonstrations.

According to the National Night Out website, at least 60 communities statewide are holding events on Tuesday.

Nationwide, there are events in 16,000 communities, involving an estimated 38 million people.
