CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — A man’s home was destroyed in a fire Wednesday, and the Draco community in Caldwell County is coming together to help.
Richard Dorenbusch is a firefighter in Lenoir, and volunteers at a second department near Oak Hill. His home is about 15 miles east of Lenoir in the Draco community.
Dorenbusch was working at Lenoir’s fire department when the fire broke out. His children were home with a babysitter. Though the fire left extensive damage, nobody was hurt and all his children escaped the house safely.
Investigators believe the fire was accidental and possibly started from a dog heat lamp that fell over on the porch.
When word got out that the fire happened at the home of a local firefighter, people began to donate household items Wednesday night. The donations continue to roll in by Thursday morning for Dorenbusch and his family.
Channel 9 bureau reporter Dave Faherty spoke with firefighters about the outpouring of support from the community.
“Some of the firefighters at Little River tell me when they got back to the firehouse after fighting the fire folks had already left donations there,” said Lenoir Fire Chief Ken Hair.
