Community pays tribute to Rocky River HS student killed in crash

MINT HILL, N.C. — Family, friends and coaching staff gathered Sunday evening for a candlelight vigil to honor a 16-year-old track star who died in a car crash.

Modesty Shelton, who was a student at Rocky River High School, was killed in a crash on her way to school Friday.

“She was a very bright and vibrant person,” friend Jaylin Randall said.

Dozens of people gathered, bringing balloons with messages and flowers.

”My family is so appreciative for everybody to come out,” family member Netra Droughn said.

The group gathered over candles that spelled out Modesty and prayed for healing and peace.

“She always had a smile on her face,” Droughn said. “Every time I was around her, there was nothing but laughter.”

Balloons were released into the air in Shelton's memory.

“She was too young to go,” Nelson said. “I know they’ve said she’s in a better place, but that’s my baby. I miss her so much."

Shelton's former track coach told Channel 9 Friday that he will be coordinating with the current coach and athletes to put a memorial near the track.

Safety improvements are being made along the stretch of Lawyers Road in Mint Hill following two deadly crashes in two weeks.

DOT said it is working to extend the guard rail and make the chevron signs more noticeable for drivers.
