Concord to put state-of-the-art traffic center to test for Roval 400 race

CONCORD, N.C. — This weekend is the first big test for a system that's supposed to keep drivers moving when traffic is at its heaviest.

Concord transportation officials said their state-of-the-art traffic center will be ready Sunday when thousands are expected to flood the city for the Roval 400 race.

"We have a timing plan, plus we have staff physically watching traffic cameras, looking for delays, making adjustments real time to make sure the rest of Concord can still function," said Concord transportation director Phillip Graham.

Channel 9's Blaine Tolison toured the traffic center when it opened in June. North Carolina is the only state that has one like it.

The system tracks 200 live cameras, 140 traffic signals and 22 school zones all connected by 100 miles of fiber cable.
