Controversial Elizabeth apartment plan on hold after neighbors object

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A controversial plan to build apartments at a popular Elizabeth intersection is now on hold after city leaders heard from several neighbors Monday night who are against the development.

Those leaders said plans to tear down Jackalope Jack’s and replace it with 125 apartments are too intense for the neighborhood.

Channel 9 was the only news crew on hand as Charlotte City Council members heard proposed plans for the site.

The battle has been ongoing for years -- a developer wants to tear down the Elizabeth staple and replace it with 125 apartments and retail and restaurant options.

The plans released at City Council didn't impress city leaders, who said they want to see major changes.

Many locals are also opposed to the project and said Elizabeth doesn't need another apartment complex.

“I mean there is one right across the street,” said Neil Mullis. “I think this creates places for those tenants to go rather than tearing really awesome places down and building more stuff.”

Last year, council heard similar plans for the site from a different developer, but those plans were scrapped.

A vote on the latest plans has not been set.
