Charlotte Fire: 3-alarm gym fire caused by electrical issue; $585K in damages

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Crews battled a three-alarm fire inside a gym Thursday night in southeast Charlotte, near Monroe and North Sharon Amity roads.

Dozens of firefighters were called to the blaze at the Trifecta Athletics Gym on Silabert Avenue after the call came in at about 6:45 p.m.

Charlotte Fire said the fire was a result of an electrical issue in an electrical distribution panel.

The damage is estimated to be at $585,000.

Channel 9 reporter Stephanie Tinoco said the fire brought in a massive amount of emergency personnel to the scene. The fire chief said more than 65 firefighters fought the fire, which took two hours to control.

Tanker trucks carrying foam spray were brought in to help douse the flames.

A worker, who was inside the building when the fire broke out, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Tinoco confirmed there was a baseball camp for 7 to 12-year-old children held at the facility between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. the same night. No children were injured, the fire chief said.

The fire chief couldn’t confirm where the fire originated but said it broke out in a warehouse at the location.

“Buildings like this give us difficult stretches, but we were able to get that taken care of,” Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson said. “There was a large amount of padding, carpet padding, matting on the inside that was actually on fire. It required us to use foam and several large hand lines.”
