Crews respond to massive fire at apartment complex in Steele Creek

CHARLOTTE — Several families are searching for a place to stay after flames tore through a home in Steele Creek.

The complex sits on Queens Harbor Road along Lake Wylie. Several local fire departments responded to the scene around 5 p.m. Sunday.

Neighbors told Channel 9’s Miana Massey that the fire destroyed several units in the close-knit community.

Loretta Cozart lives nearby. She and her husband rushed outside when they saw the smoke.

“We came out, and there was smoke everywhere, and it just kept billowing out, and we were hoping they were getting it under control,” she said. “And then we started to see a lot of dark smoke, and we know so we know that’s wood burning and we know that’s not good and we saw the flames burst through the roof.”

Several neighbors are looking at the ways they can best support those who have lost their homes.

“Initially, you just feel for them,” Corzart said. “What can I do to help them? Now it’s going to be all hands on deck with our neighbors. What can we do? Where are they going to stay?”

MEDIC did respond to the scene, and officials say no one was injured in the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
