Arrest made after man found shot to death in west Charlotte yard

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have arrested a man who they said shot and killed another man in west Charlotte Thursday night.

The homicide on Rhyne Station Road was one of three separate shootings in Charlotte Thursday night.

Officers found the victim, 25-year-old Matthew Gibbons, in the front yard of a home, suffering from a gunshot wound around 8:30 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they believe the victim and the shooter, 28-year-old Willie James Jr., knew each other, but no motive has been released.

Gibbons slaying marks the sixth homicide in Charlotte for 2018.

No further information about the crime has been released.

In a separate incident, at about 7:10 p.m., A 13-year-old was shot in the leg after being robbed at gunpoint on Forestbrook Drive in west Charlotte, police said.

The victim was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A third shooting happened around 7:50 p.m. in the 7100 block of Albemarle Road. That victim was taken to the hospital but is expected to survive.
