CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Big changes could be coming to an Elizabeth neighborhood including turning a popular restaurant into an apartment complex.
Charlotte City Council will be asked to approve rezoning half the block from Caswell Road to Clement Avenue along 7th Street to make way for 200 apartment units and 15,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space.
Apartment developer Faison would be leading the project.
The area up for rezoning would include the land where furniture design store The Rusty Rabbit and restaurants Jackalope Jacks and Philosopher's Stone Tavern.
"It's really sad. I know that all these places mean a lot to people," resident Samantha Marcil said.
The Rusty Rabbit's owners said they would move when the time comes to build but developers have not approached them about a plan.
Jackalope Jacks owners couldn't be reached for comment.
City leaders have approved many rezoning requests clearing the way for apartments and condos to be built in several other neighborhoods across the city. Some people worry the new, proposed development in Elizabeth will just be more of the same and less of the uniqueness they like about where they live.
"You see the same big apartment blocks going up all over the place. Same thing in Plaza Midwood and really they don't do anything for the neighborhoods," resident Bryan Savage said.
"I think it just takes away from the people that are invested in the community," Mary To said.
The rezoning process takes time so these businesses won't have to leave for a while.
People will be able to voice their opinions on it during the public hearing on Sept. 21.
