Dilworth Soup Kitchen seeing more people in need of food as inflation increases

CHARLOTTE — The Dilworth Soup Kitchen has seen an increase in people needing food with inflation on the rise.

Suzanne Sigmon, one of many volunteers who provide hot take-out lunches, said she has seen the increase and is glad she can help feed those who need it most.

“People are out of work, hungry and it’s I think it’s despicable in our country that people are hungry. So we’re doing what little we can to help,” Sigmon said.

Sigmon has been a part of the kitchen for 12 years.

“I love to cook. I love feeding people and making feel good with food,” Sigmon said.

Statistics show the cost of food has increased 13.5% over the last year. Currently, the country is experiencing the biggest food inflation since 1979.

Due to that, lines for food are getting longer and longer.

Tom Fedell, Board Chair of the Dilworth Soup Kitchen, said the kitchen feeds over 200 people on a daily basis.

The kitchen is located on East Boulevard and serves lunch Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to noon. No requirements are needed to get food.
