TAYLORSVILLE — A man was indicted for embezzling more than $200,000 from a funeral home in Taylorsville.
Prosecutors told Channel 9 Mark Odom worked at Adams Funeral Home for years. Court documents said he handled finances, which is how he had access to the money.
As Odom walked into the courthouse Monday afternoon to face a judge he told reporter Dave Faherty he could not say anything under the advice of his attorney.
Prosecutors said some of the money he embezzled came from people who prepaid their funeral expenses or the expenses for loved ones.
Many people in the area were surprised by the allegations, as the funeral home has been operating in the area for more than 100 years.
The funeral home released a statement that said in part: "This is an unfortunate and regrettable situation that we hope will be handled swiftly."
The State Bureau of Investigation is taking over the case.
