Draughn High School softball player killed in crash, troopers say

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — Weather is being blamed for a deadly crash Friday morning involving twin sisters in Burke County, troopers said.

The Highway Patrol responded to the accident on Enola Road, south of Morganton.

Troopers said it was raining at the time when 17-year-old Meleah Carswell lost control her SUV, went down an embankment and hit a tree. Her twin sister, Mackenzie, died. The twin sisters were heading to an early morning meeting at Draugh High School.

Channel 9 went by the school and saw where officials put Mackenzie’s softball number on the football field for Friday night’s game. The team will also honor her by placing her number on their helmets.

Students will wear pink and also hold a moment of silence to remember Mackenzie at the football game.

Troopers said Meleah was driving too fast for the wet conditions, but won’t be charged in the crash.
