Driver says man pulled gun on him in road-rage incident in University City

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A case of aggressive driving turned into road rage in University City Wednesday, according to police.

A 19-year-old man told police he was driving his brother home just before 1 p.m. on Old Concord Road when the driver of a Ford Mustang began tailgating him.

“He was almost bumper-to-bumper with me,” the man told Channel 9. “I like stopped a little bit, so he could get off me.”

It was a move the man believes made the other driver angry, but what happened next he never expected.

The victim told Channel 9 that the driver crossed the double yellow line on the one-lane road, sped up and then pulled out a gun.

“He takes out a gun and pulls it out on me and my brother. Just aiming it towards me the whole time he was beside us,” the victim said.

No one was hurt.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported that 12,000 people were injured over a seven-year period as result of road rage.

In North Carolina, local troopers say they respond to reports of a driver pulling out a gun on the road at least twice a month.

In December 2016, a Concord man was arrested after police say he pointed a gun at a woman with her kids in the car.

Earlier that year, a Gastonia father called 911 after an aggressive driver opened fire on his truck.

As for the victim in Wednesday’s road rage incident, police said the man did the best thing by pulling over and calling 911.

No injuries were reported. No arrests have been made.
