Duke Energy details layoffs, severance costs in new SEC filing

CHARLOTTE — Duke Energy Corp. has laid off more than 500 employees since the beginning of 2021 as it strives for more efficiency and responds to the demands of a rapidly changing industry.

The 233 employees Duke laid off at the end of 2022 to lower operating costs were fewer than the 290 laid off in 2021, according to a new filing with federal regulators.

The severance for those employees amounted to about $57 million of the $105 million in expenses for workplace and workforce realignment the company reported for 2022. The figures are listed in the annual financial report, known as form 10-K, Duke filed today with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
