MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — Officials said alcohol and reckless driving were factors in a deadly crash Wednesday afternoon in western Mecklenburg County.
Crews responded to a serious wreck around 6:30 p.m. on Wilkinson Boulevard near the Catawba Bridge.
Officials said Christopher Ryan Goss, 31, was driving a gold 1999 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck in the westbound lanes of Wilkinson Boulevard from Moores Chapel Loop.
Goss crossed the double-yellow center line into oncoming traffic and hit a blue Hyundai Elantra head on. Goss was taken to a hospital suffering from serious injuries, officials said.
Shannon Hinson Young, 44, was driving the Elantra with Joyce Burline Hinson, 72, in the front passenger seat. Hinson died at a hospital from injuries sustained in the crash, officials said. Young was taken to a hospital suffering from serious injuries.
A third vehicle - a silver 2010 Hyundai Elantra - was also involved in the crash, officials said. The driver, Gary Everette Gourley, 61, suffered minor injuries in the crash.
Chopper 9 flew over the scene where there appeared to be a head-on collision between a pickup truck and a car. Another vehicle could be seen down an embankment off the road.
The road was shut down in both directions for hours.
Goss was charged at the hospital with driving while impaired. Detectives obtained warrants for Goss for felony death by motor vehicle, felony serious injury by motor vehicle and careless and reckless driving.
