Father of bullied son wants stronger anti-bullying laws

SALISBURY, N.C. — The parents of a Salisbury middle school student took a stand against bullying Thursday just weeks after their son took his own life.

Scott Safrit and the community gathered in the Cornerstone Church to say enough is enough.

"I just don't want Daniel's death to be in vain," said Safrit, Daniel's father.

Scottie and Tina Safrit lost 11-year-old Daniel in September when he took his own life.
Daniel complained to his parents about being bullied at school.

His parents worked with school leaders at Erwin Middle School to stop it.

They changed his class schedule but the Safrits said nothing changed.

They say this event is about making sure things do.

Kim Brown is a parent of an eighth-grader at Erwin Middle School. She helped organize the event after bullying affected her son.

"Seeing your son laying in a hospital bed with his arm in the shape of an 'S,' it's kind of heartbreaking as a parent," Brown said.

Scottie Safrit tells us he met with the principal at Erwin Middle School Thursday.

He said the two talked about ways to improve protection at school against bullying.

He expects changes to go into effect soon.
