NEBO, N.C. (AP) — An air quality alert has been issued for two wildfires in the Pisgah National Forest in western North Carolina.
State officials issued an advisory Thursday for pollution from the fires for Alexander, Avery, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, McDowell and Watauga counties.
The Bald Knob fire in McDowell County has burned more than 500 acres. Officials have been unable to contain the flames.
The Wolf Creek fire in Old Fort has burned more than 230 acres. Officials say that fire is about 40 percent contained.
Officials said communities near the Bald Knob fire may to have ground-level smoke Friday morning. The North Carolina Division of Air Quality said elevated pollution had been measured in both Boone and Marion.
There was a 40 percent chance of rain Friday.
