Passerby helps two escape from Granite Falls burning home

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — A passerby stopped to get the attention of two people who were inside a burning home Friday morning.

The fire happened around 10 a.m. in the 700 block of Salisbury Avenue in Granite Quarry.

Investigators said the passerby pulled over in the road and got the attention of a man in the home.

Eleanor Corriher told Channel 9 that man is her ex-husband. She was in the back of the home while he was in the front when the fire started.

Corriher said she might not have been able to help get her ex-husband out if the bystander hadn’t woken him up.

"They were determined they were going to get us out," she said.

Corriher was able to get one of her three cats out but couldn't get to the other two in time.

"I lost my 10-year-old cat and my 2-year-old cat in there. I couldn't get to them."

Medical crews treated Corriher, her ex-husband, the passerby and a firefighter on the scene but they were all released.

Crews could not immediately determine what started the fire.
