ANSON COUNTY, N.C. — Former leaders at the Morven Volunteer Fire Department now face embezzlement charges, according to Anson County officials.
At the end of September, the sheriff’s office arrested the former fire chief, William Stubbs, and Mark Holloway, the department’s former assistant fire chief, on charges of embezzlement and criminal conspiracy.
Investigators allege more than $300,000 in tax funding meant for the department was used for personal purposes between August 2022 and April 2026.
Both Stubbs and Holloway were arrested earlier this year in separate incidents.

Officials said detectives are still investigating financial records in relation to the case and examining whether additional transactions or people may be involved.
