EYESORE: Furniture, toilets, trash being dumped at Harrisburg condo

HARRISBURG, N.C. — There's a compactor dumpster off Main Street in Harrisburg that has been becoming an eyesore for residents who live nearby.

Patty LeCompte walks her dog in the area and she is familiar with seeing a lot of bulk items near the dumpster.

"Oh gosh, the one that sticks out in my head was a mattress," LeCompte said.

A resident shared pictures of the mess with Channel 9. One of the pictures showed trash and some furniture overflowing into the parking lot. Another picture showed someone had illegally dumped toilets.

"Weather is going to be nice soon and you're going to sit on the patio. That’s the last thing you want to look at," LeCompte said.

The dumpster is meant for residents that live in the Town Center community, but other people in the town use it as well. Channel 9 saw a man who didn't live in the community dump his trash in the dumpster Wednesday.

He said he has never dumped bulk items, but he's seen them there before.

"You can basically furnish a house," the man said.

The town of Harrisburg contracts a company called Waste Pro to collect the trash. Employees said Wednesday that they are supposed to collect once a week, but they actually collecting twice a day because of the excess trash.

The management company for the condo community said they are aware of the concerns from residents and are working toward a solution, which could include a new dumpster.

Cabarrus County wants to remind residents there are resources in the community to help remove trash and bulk items. They launched an app last year called Cartology that allows residents to search where they can drop off items.
