CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools team will help keep students safer this year.

The yellow lab, named Gage, is part of the CMS police force, and the department’s first K-9.

Gage will patrol inside and outside of schools, and even check cars for banned substances.

“Gage's role is to make our schools safer,” said CMS Police Chief Randy Hagler. “And to encourage kids to come to school ready to learn and not bring narcotics with them.”

CMS police budgeted $20,000 for Gage's training, veterinarian visits, housing and food.
