Channel 9's Gina Esposito found five stations off Monroe Road with low, competitive prices. There is also a pocket of gas stations from I-485 to Covedale Road charging less than $2 per gallon. Drivers said they've noticed the drop in prices in those areas.

“I purposely get gas down here because it is anywhere from five to 10 cents cheaper than in Charlotte,” said driver Samantha Britton.

AAA said gas stations clustered near each other can drive competition, which can force down prices force other stations to drive down prices for customers.

Mike Thornbrugh, a spokesman for QuikTrip, contributes lower prices to competition since there is a healthy level of supply and demand. He said he has seen prices stabilize over the past 10 days.

“The pipeline issue has been fixed and now you are seeing it all coming back,” Thornburgh said.

Drivers in the Carolinas were paying more for gas a few weeks ago because of a broken pipeline and the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew.
