GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — The family of a Gaston County toddler who died from e. coli after a visit to the Cleveland County Fair is moving forward with a lawsuit.
Gage LeFevers, 2, died last October.
Eyewitness News spoke with his family's attorney, who is based in Minnesota, on Wednesday. He has filed a complaint against the Cleveland County Fair and Circle G Ranch, which operated a petting zoo at last year's fair.
Attorney Fred Pritzker said he believes the e. coli outbreak could have been prevented, especially since new regulations were put in place following a similar outbreak at the North Carolina State Fair in 2011.
"The TN Corporation claims it doesn't have any insurance for this loss, and the Cleveland County Fair is denying it's responsible, even though we truly believe that it is," Pritzker said.
The attorney said the LeFevers' case will be combined with about 10 others involved in the e. coli outbreak that will be heard by one judge.
