GASTONIA, N.C. — A Gastonia fireman hit the jackpot in the North Carolina Education Lottery last week.

Glenn Mace, a driver for the Gastonia Fire Department Station 3, claimed a prize of $611,447 in the Carolina Cash 5 game on Friday.

Mace works for the fire station that serves the Union Road area of Gastonia. Lottery officials said he bought the $1 winning ticket at Mountain Stop on Archie Whitesides Road.

Mace's ticket matched all five numbers in Thursday's drawing. That makes him one of the biggest Carolina Cash 5 jackpot winners in N.C. Education Lottery history.

Lottery officials said that after required state and federal withholdings, the after-tax value of the prize totaled $415,784.

"I'm speechless," Glenn told lottery officials. "We'll pay the house off first thing, and we've always wanted a little place at the beach, so we'll see."

The couple added that they would share some of the winnings with their two adult children.
