The brewer — one of the oldest in Germany, dating to 1546 — will operate a 9,500-square-foot brewery and restaurant in lower South End — at 3530 Dewitt Lane.

“We’ve created an immersive experience for our guests to give them a true interpretation of German culture, cuisine, and, of course, beer,” says Mike Gaertner, president of Gilde.

The Charlotte market was a natural fit for expansion with its fast growth and strong craft-beer industry, he adds. There also are 200-plus companies with German ties in the local market.

“I know a lot of people are waiting for a German experience,” Gaertner says. “A lot of people tend to come back to well-made beers; you have the clean taste. That’s what we want to offer the people.”
