Gov. Cooper announces his choice for new Mecklenburg Co. DA

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper announced Tuesday that he plans to appoint Spencer Merriweather to serve as the Mecklenburg County district attorney as soon as Andrew Murray leaves the seat.

“Spencer brings to this position more than a decade of experience in the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office,” Cooper said. “His comprehensive legal background and commitment to serving North Carolinians will allow him to excel as District Attorney.”

Merriweather is a strong advocate for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence and serves as a member of the board of Safe Alliance.

President Donald Trump nominated Murray to become the U.S. attorney for the Western District of North Carolina. A Senate Judiciary Committee voted unanimously last week to consider him for the position.

Merriweather’s appointment will be made official once the U.S. Senate confirms Murray to the U.S. Attorney position.
