Ground stop lifted at CLT Douglas after storms roll through area, delays expected

CHARLOTTE — A ground stop has been lifted at Charlotte Douglas International Airport due to thunderstorms in the area, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Thunderstorms moved through the Charlotte area Saturday morning, triggering a thunderstorm and tornado warning until 8 a.m. The ground stop was to be lifted by 8:15 a.m. and then extended to 8:45 a.m.

According to FlightAware, there have been more than 580 delays at the airport as of 11 p.m. There have only been 20 cancellations.

Channel 9 reporter Glenn Counts spoke with passenger Cortllyn Brow who said it’s been a headache trying to get to New Orleans.

“So the first flight was delayed about two hours and now they keep pushing it back in increments. So we’ll see,” Brown told Channel 9.

Passenger Andrew Brucker said he was just trying to make it back home to New Jersey. He said he and his son were trying to return home after spending the day looking at colleges.

“We started our trip on a college tour and then went to Raleigh. They canceled our flight and there were no flights, so jumped in a car and came over to Charlotte. And we’re trying to work our way back to Newark,” Brucker explained.

Pam Robinson told Channel 9 that she was her husband were heading on a vacation in Florida and they kind of expected things to be slow.

“We were supposed to depart at 3 p.m. and now we’re looking at 5:57 p.m., Yes so quite a delay. A little delayed which we kind of anticipated because of the storms,” Robinson said.

So far, none of the passengers say they are worried about spending the night at the airport, and hope things will stay that way.
