CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A group of people want to make turn the busy Central Avenue in Plaza Midwood from four lanes to two lanes with a middle turn lane to make way for a grassroots effort called “Stroll and Roll” to include wide bike lanes on both sides.
Renee Bradley and the group showed the renderings to Charlotte City Council Monday.
They also submitted a petition with 1,000 signatures calling on leaders to commission a study of the corridor with the Charlotte Department of Transportation.
'We've definitely got a long ways to go,” Bradley said. “Funding will be a big challenge. The other challenge will be Central Avenue has got a lot going on in that corridor."
Bradley said they're not official plans, but hope they motivate leaders.
"It is something that we want to inspire people with and show that Central Avenue can be a whole different place than it is today," Bradley said.
The challenge is the already heavy traffic that plagues the area throughout the day.
Bradley hopes the work on the nearby Independence Boulevard will relieve Central Avenue of congestion.
"We realize it is a challenging project, so it may take some time," Bradley said.
Residents are waiting to hear back from city council on whether they'll decide to conduct an in depth study.
