Gun, ammunition found on Independence High School grounds

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Local law enforcement is investigating after a weapon with ammunition was found on the grounds of Independence High School in east Charlotte.

In a message sent to parents, school leaders said the gun was found in a wooded area on the school's property.

SCHOOL STATEMENT:

Good morning Independence families, this is Principal Legrand with an important message regarding our school today.  As you know the safety of all students and staff is top priority for me and our team.  This morning we learned that a weapon with ammunition was found in school grounds.  The weapon is in the custody of law enforcement and is part of an active law enforcement investigation.

The weapon was not found inside of our school building, instead it was found in a wooded area on our school property. There was not threat to students or staff.  Thank you for your support of Independence High School.

Authorities said there was no threat to students or staff at the school.

Officials said the weapon is with law enforcement officers and is part of an active investigation.

“Of course, I text her to make sure she's OK,” parent Anna Perez said. “But they’re testing. I can’t get a hold of her so it’s nerve-wracking. You know this is not the first time this has happened here at school.”

She said the school called her three times to alert her of what happened. Perez said she was happy with how they handled it.

This is an ongoing investigation. Check back with wsoctv.com for more information.
