YORK, S.C. — The former head of the Greater York Chamber of Commerce has been arrested.
Mary Ward, 50, was charged Thursday with fraud and breach of trust.
She was fired from the chamber last spring following reports of financial irregularities.
Channel 9 has learned last June that Ward was fired after the discovery of what police called financial irregularities.
York Mayor Eddie Lee said in June that he and the City Council were told of the allegations and knew a full investigation was coming.
“I think what we are going to try to do is, we’re going to try to move forward, and we’ll see how this case resolves itself,” Lee said in June.
York Police said they had the case first but turned it over to SLED due to a conflict of interest.
Channel 9 spoke with Chamber President Ainsley Moss.
“The Greater York Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is fully cooperating with authorities and continues to strive to maintain the trust of those we serve,” Moss said.
