Hickory woman killed while crossing Highway 70; driver charged

HICKORY, N.C. — A 56-year-old woman was killed after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Highway 70 in Hickory last Friday night.

The Hickory Police Department responded around 11:25 p.m. to reports of a pedestrian struck on US 70 SW between 12th Street SW and 13th Street SW.

Police identified the woman as Sonia Gooslin Stovall of Hickory. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, Stovall was attempting to cross the highway from the south side when she was struck by a 2018 Jeep Compass traveling west in the far-left lane.

The driver, 47-year-old Alex Dula of Connelly Springs, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, driving while license revoked and failure to reduce speed.

Dula was given an $8,000 unsecured bond.
