High-speed chase ends when suspect crashes into carport in Caldwell County, officials say

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — Officials said a high-speed chase ended when the car they were pursing crashed and took out a carport at a home in Caldwell County.

Channel 9 observed the extensive damage to the foreclosed home on Setzers Creek Road north of Lenoir Tuesday.

Police said the driver and his two passengers ran off into the woods after the crash.

The driver, Johnathon Kersey, was arrested and charged with speeding to elude, driving with a revoked license and possession of meth.

Jayne Hall, who lives next door, thought an earthquake had hit, but instead saw the damage to her neighbor’s home in the Patterson community.

Police said the car crashed into the house during a police chase that started in Lenoir Tuesday morning because the driver was speeding.

“I was standing at the kitchen sink and I heard a loud boom,” Hall said. “I guarantee they were going at least at 100 (mph) or more.”

No other details have been released.
