Highway 74 water main break causes congestion in Monroe

MONROE — North Carolina Department of Transportation crews are working to repair a water main break on Highway 74 in Monroe.

The break started about 6:45 a.m. in the eastbound lane of the highway, near South Bivens Road. Monroe city officials are not sure what caused the break.

The Union County Sheriff's Office is redirecting traffic near the Tyson plant.

The Monroe Police Department said employees of the Monroe Water Resources Department are continuing to work on the problem, but the repair will most likely not be complete until early Sunday morning. They encourage motorists to pay attention and be patient in the area.

Part of the congestion was due to people who were headed to Wingate University for the school's commencement ceremony, featuring Gov. Pat McCrory as a speaker. The commencement went on as planned.
