Woman escapes injury when tree crashes into bedroom

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A north Charlotte homeowner told Channel 9 that a late night snack craving likely saved her life when a tree came crashing through her bedroom wall and onto her bed.

Storms were rolling through the Charlotte area around 11:30 p.m. when one tree fell on another, which then slammed into Katina White-Price’s bedroom window on Mason Drive.

“I thank God I'm alive,” White-Price said. “This tree right here. It could have been it for me.”

She said she’s normally in bed at that time but was hungry and left her bedroom to go eat steak.

White-Price said she and her dog were the only ones home at the time and they jumped into the tub because she thought the entire house was going to be destroyed.

“I really felt I was in the tornado,” White-Price said. “When I heard the boom, I ran straight into the bathroom.”

A refrigerator outside her bedroom window helped prop the tree up, keeping it from falling all the way through the wall. The refrigerator stopped working so they temporarily moved it there.

White-Price said the weather was very bad at the time the trees came down.

This isn’t the first time White-Price has experienced disaster at the home -- in 2010 her home caught fire, and she told Channel 9 she’s now thinking about renting an apartment.

According to Duke Energy, more than 800 Charlotte residents are still without power because of the storms.
