Man arrested in connection with a fatal shooting in University City, CMPD says

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department announced it has arrested a person in connection with a fatal shooting in University City on Wednesday morning.

CMPD officers were called to an apartment complex at University Village Boulevard, where they found a male victim who had been shot at around 11 a.m.

Investigators say the victim, 28-year-old Cordarrius Donquay Harris, died from his injuries.

The department said 19-year-old Rohan Viresh Taskar has been charged with voluntary manslaughter, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, obstruction of justice, and misdemeanor breaking and entering.

“This is the Christmas season. We have officers that are currently out delivering Christmas presents to community members,” Maj. Cecil Brisbon told Channel 9 on Wednesday night.

“On a day where we are trying to give back to the community, we’re still pulled into investigating senseless violent crimes,” he added.

Students who live in the complex were understandably unsettled when they heard about the shooting.

“My dad was telling me. I immediately locked the door, she freaked out when I told her what happened,” Kylie Bowling recounted her experience of informing her roommate about the shooting.

“When she locked the door, I had a number of scenarios running through my head,” Bowling’s roommate, Melanie Rojas, said. “I was like, is this person out trying to shoot, what’s happening? I was very scared.”
