LANCASTER, S.C. — Doctors and staff members at MUSC Health Lancaster celebrated one year of performing kidney transplants at the hospital.
Hospital officials say a patient who gets a kidney transplant is seven times more likely to survive than one who stays on dialysis.
Doctors say several factors can lead to kidney failure.
“The most common reason overall in the U.S. is hypertension and diabetes, and those two are rampant in our area,” said Dr. Prince Anand, with MUSC Health Lancaster. “I would say most people, if not 60% in these states, kidneys fail because of high blood pressure and diabetes.”
The doctor’s best advice for keeping kidneys healthy is exercise, weight control, and listen to your doctors, especially if you are diabetic.
