How is Duke Energy safely recycling coal ash from the Buck Steam Station?

SALISBURY, N.C. — Duke Energy has started the process of recycling coal ash from the Buck Steam Station in Salisbury.

As part of Duke’s plan with the Department of Environmental Quality, when the ash is removed, it is taken to a recycling plant where it will be used to strengthen concrete.

Duke agreed to remove 80 million tons of coal ash as part of an agreement with the state. Most of the ash will be moved to lined landfills -- a process that could take up to 15 years.
