ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — A local elementary school teacher is off the job and one mother claims it’s because the teacher tied her son to a chair.
The district told Channel 9′s Hannah Goetz that they’re conducting an internal investigation, but the mother wants police to step in.
The mother said she was notified that her 6-year-old son was tied to a chair, which she said is against district protocol. She said her son is non-verbal so she needs to be his voice.
“This teacher should not be allowed in another classroom,” Colletta Redmon said. “I need some answers.”
Redmon is fighting for those answers after she said she received a call Wednesday from her son Reggie’s principal, telling her that nearly three weeks earlier, Reggie has been tied to a chair by a teacher. She said the official investigation started more than a week before she was notified.
“I am disappointed because I trusted these people to take care of my child while I go to work. I trusted them to help me provide an education for him. I trusted them to look after him and now I can’t trust them, I cant,” Redmon told Goetz.
She said since Reggie has autism and is nonverbal, he was unable to hear something had happened at school.
“What does a mother do? What does a mother do that has a child with autism that she has to send to school, what do you do?” Redmon said.
Channel 9 reached out to Rowan-Salisbury Schools and received an email saying, “An internal human resources investigation is being conducted, and the individual in question is no longer a Rowan-Salisbury School System employee.”
Redmon said she has been given little information about the incident and was not told who the teacher in question is. Goetz was there Friday as Redmon went to various offices to file a police report. She wants charges.
“I want the generalized public to know this happened to him and it should not happen, will not happen to any other child,” she said.
According to the student code of conduct, a detailed written report must be provided to the parent no more than 30 days after the incident. Redmon said she’s been told the report should be done by Monday.
Goetz reached out to the Rowan-Salisbury School District to learn what the district’s policy is on notifying parents and law enforcement when something like this happens. They responded saying, “Rowan-Salisbury Schools also cooperates with law enforcement when appropriate.”
