‘I just heard a loud boom’: Another customer says oven glass shattered

CHARLOTTE — Another customer said the glass on her oven door has shattered. Alyce Warren said her mother was in the kitchen, cooking dinner when it happened.

“I just heard a loud boom, like some bomb had gone off in our house. And I came down to see what was going on and, literally, the outside of our stove, the glass had exploded,” she told Action 9′s Jason Stoogenke. “It just exploded. The glass just went everywhere … shattered everywhere.”

She said some pieces “shot probably halfway across” her kitchen.

Fortunately, no one was hurt.

“This could happen to somebody else. This could have injured my child. This could’ve injured my mom or ... I’m eight months pregnant. I could have been standing there,” she said. “The main reason I reached out to the news is just to get the information out there that this has happened to me, could happen to someone else, and maybe, maybe something can change with Frigidaire, I don’t know.”

Stoogenke started investigating similar complaints involving Frigidaire Gallery ovens late last year.

In the past, Frigidaire’s parent company, Electrolux, acknowledged this issue, emailing him, “Although infrequent, oven glass may break.”

Warren said she complained to the company, but that her oven’s well out of warranty and Electrolux wouldn’t cover the damage. But, after Action 9 emailed the company, it offered Warren a discount for the repair. It didn’t say how much, but Warren said the company offered $69 and that she had to pay the rest of the $313 bill.

Electrolux advises costumers to follow all the advice in the Owner’s Manual. The manual reminds consumers:

  • Don’t “hit the glass with pots, pans, or any other object.”
  • Don’t “close the oven door until all of the … racks are … in place.”
  • “Scratching, hitting, jarring, or stressing the glass may weaken its structure, causing an increased risk of breakage.”

If it happens to you, file a complaint with the Consumer Product Safety Commission and let Action 9 know as well.
