Indian Trail home featured on ABC's ‘Great Christmas Light Fight'

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — An Indian Trail family's home was featured on ABC's "Great Christmas Light Fight" Monday night.

Their display, which has 142,000 lights and took more than 660 man-hours has been more than 20 years in the making.

The Smaragdis family has been decorating since 1996 and it gets bigger every year.

“This is Nikitas’ Christmas Wonderland,” Nikitas Smaragdis said.

They had to start in August for the show taping. Usually, they have it all done by Thanksgiving.

Smaragdis makes a new building each year with wood and PVS pipes. There are 13 now.

The spectacle attracts up to 500 visitors some nights, and the family takes donations for Hemby Children's Hospital.

Smaragdis’ wife, Katina Smaragdis, loves the display.

“I decorate inside the buildings,” she said. “I make sure it looks pretty and it flows.”

The family said it takes about 100 hours to take down, which happens at the end of January.
