Inside a popular concert venue's return to South End

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — John Ellison just couldn’t stay away.

The longtime owner of Amos’ Southend recently opened the newest iteration of his popular concert hall — the third in the brand’s history — in South End. Amos’ is now tucked into the space behind The Gin Mill on South Tryon Street, which Ellison also owns.

It’s been a little over two years since Ellison shuttered Amos’ in that neighborhood in the face of ongoing redevelopment in South End’s business and retail corridor. The business had been part of the Charlotte community for 28 years.

“There’s memories, but you’ve got to put the past behind you,” he says.

Then came an offer he couldn’t refuse on a new space with reasonable rent; Ellison decided to jump back in.

He’s invested roughly $450,000 into the new two-story space, including a mezzanine. At 7,000 square feet, it’s about 50% smaller than its former location. The venue can accommodate less than 600 people.

“It’s a lot more intimate,” Ellison says.
