CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Ballantyne family decorated their home with Hanukkah decorations and soon after that, someone painted a swastika on their garage door.
The family discovered the symbol Tuesday at their home on Providence Road West.
“This is something the Jewish community has experienced before,” Rabbi Asher Knight, with Temple Beth El, said.
Knight said the family is shaken.
“This is probably the act of an individual, but (they are) concerned (about) how to explain this to their children, how this impacts their community,” Knight said.
Family members painted over the swastika before the children in the family returned home from school.
“This is a community they have lived in for years and felt safe,” Knight said, “and to have something hateful emerge right in their neighborhood, right on their house, is upsetting.”
Knight said hate against one group often leads to hate against others.
The family filed a report with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
