CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Business Journal’s recent Women in Business Achievement Awards event was flush with tales of inspiration and determination from more than two dozen female business leaders as they journeyed their way up the corporate ladder and, in some cases, founded companies or nonprofits.
There were major accomplishments highlighted in those professional and personal paths as well as obstacles overcome and lessons learned along the way.
CBJ’s Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Tryon International Equestrian Center COO Sharon Decker, whose career has spanned industries and job titles, offered a wealth of advice in front of a crowd of about 250 guests who’d gathered last Monday at Charlotte Marriott Center City in uptown for the 23rd annual awards event. She urged women in the audience to have the courage to make decisions on their own, break away from their busy lives and careers to find quiet time, always be thankful, get outside, read a great book and make their journeys about something bigger than themselves.
As part of the awards program, CBJ asked each honoree to send in a yearbook-era photo and answer the following questions: “What were you thinking at that moment in the yearbook photo, and what advice would you give her today?” They were asked to share those pictures and thoughts with the audience at the event.
Check out their photos and responses here.
