Lenoir man brings people to safety during Las Vegas shooting

LENOIR, N.C. — Lucas Bruch of Lenoir was in Las Vegas and was staying several floors below the shooter at the Mandalay Bay. He was outside when gunfire erupted.

“I could see the muzzle flash in the window and I could see the curtains of the window flying out in the gunfire," Bruch said.

He initially thought someone got shot inside a hotel room.

When he realized shots were coming out from the window, he ran behind an SUV under the carport awning and yelled at others to do the same.

He then saw the angle of the rifle and knew the gunman was shooting toward the country concert, he had seen minutes before from his hotel room.

"The emotional toll has kind of sunk in a little bit,” Bruch said. “I realized I just sat there and watched somebody kill innocent people. And the more I thought about the view from my room of the concert, they had nowhere to go."

After the shooting, Bruch could not get back to his hotel room because the hotel was on lockdown. He ended up sleeping on the floor of a gas station down the street.

Bruch cut his work trip short and flew home Tuesday.

Bruch explained how even during the worst circumstance, he saw the best of people coming out and helping strangers.
