Local nonprofit to hand out thousands of backpacks, supplies to students in need

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The need for school supplies across the Charlotte area is greater than ever as thousands of children get ready to learn from home next week.

Wednesday, Barringer Academic Center held their Welcome Back Drive Thru event to give families needed technology and learning resources for the school year. Children also got new bookbags full of school supplies from Classroom Central and their partners. The David A. Tepper Charitable Foundation, Carolina Panthers, Bank of America, Barings all sponsor the Backpacks & Basics Program.

The organization said it is providing free backpacks to 30,000 students at 33 of the highest need CMS schools. In addition, they are also fundraising and receiving donations to serve another 97,000 students.
