Local teens have fun playing music with Cyndi Lauper at Spectrum Center

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two local teens got the opportunity of a lifetime to perform in front of thousands of fans of a 1980s pop icon at the Spectrum Center in uptown Charlotte.

Mya Worley, 14, and her younger brother Ronald Jr. Worley, 13, were playing music at the corner of Trade and Tryon Friday night, but they did not notice performer Cyndi Lauper observing the duo.

Lauper’s manager approached their father, Ronald Sr., and told him how they were impressed by his children’s music.

The manager asked if the teens wanted to perform Lauper’s popular 1983 song “Girl’s Just Want to Have Fun” Saturday night at the arena.

Lauper was set to play that night in front of 20,000 people.

“I thought it was a dream,” Mya said. “I  was like, ‘What are you serious?’ I was shocked.

“I've always told them that hard work pays off,” their father said. “You work hard, practice hard, good things will come and it happened.”

Mya and Ronald Jr. couldn’t sleep with less than one day to prepare for the concert.

“That was my first time playing with a live band,” Ronald Jr. said. “That was my first time, and I loved her band members. (They) were really nice. Even when you mess up, they show you how to do it better.”

It was an amazing memory this family will always treasure.

“I appreciate what she did for my kids,” the father said. “She didn't have to do it. (She) could have walked by but she didn't and I love her for that.”

“I love you so much Cyndi Lauper,” Mya said. “I will never forget about you. I love you so much.”

Mya and Ronald have a Youtube channel. Check out some of their music here.
