CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Veterans Bridge Home is a Charlotte nonprofit that, as its name implies, connects military service members and their families with jobs, housing and social networking. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that the organization employed a similar strategy for finding and developing a new headquarters on a tight budget, enlisting backers including Lowe’s, the Carolina Panthers and the Charlotte Hornets.
Last week, contributors, supporters and veterans attended an opening ceremony at the 10,000-square-foot headquarters, located between Renaissance Park and the intersection of Billy Graham Parkway and South Tryon Street. BECO Management owns the 91,000-square-foot building, Airport Plaza, that now includes Veterans Bridge.
The centerpiece is a 3,000-square-foot hub that will serve as a community center and meeting space as well as a casual gathering spot. The open space allows for multiple setups; there are also several small, glass-enclosed offices for job interviews, counseling sessions and other confidential conversations.
As for those networking skills: Veterans Bridge had collaborated with Lowe’s on community work before, and the locally based home improvement retailer’s foundation encouraged Veterans Bridge to think bigger.
